“Any healthy man can go without food for two days - but not without poetry”                                                             Charles Baudelaire

Your course has a basic structure, however on your booking form you are invited to provide information relating to your favourite poets, your favourite poem and an idea of what you would like to learn or take away from the course. This information will be used where possible to customise parts of the course for individuals.

The courses are normally limited to eight participants. Sometimes, depending on the time of year, a group might be smaller. The course works just as well for small as well as the larger groups. There are advantages to both; greater group interaction with the larger groups, more individual tuition a focus on individual goals in the smaller group.

Courses are never cancelled, whatever their size. Participants usually book their holiday time and flights or ferries well in advance and they can be confident that Poetry in France will respect their arrangements.

The course is structured rather than rigid. There are exercises and games, but they are not competitive. Although part of the pleasure of being in a workshop is to read your work and have it constructively commented on by the tutor and your peers, there will be no pressure to read aloud until you feel comfortable in doing so. Feedback is an essential part of learning to write well. All criticism is positive, constructive and passive, and provides a wonderful opportunity to hear how your writing sounds to others and to learn from them.
